The Rising Star

Over the course of my time of coaching senior folks I’ve had the privilege of observing some of the not-so-big things many successful ones do to positively impress. For sure they’re capable people. Well-groomed. Articulate. Intelligent. Energetic. But in many cases they do things in more thoughtful and complete ways than “the rest”… like:

1. Always being there when needed…never missing commitments…coming in early when deadlines are pending…going the extra mile – always!
2. Keeping “to do lists”. Sometimes handwritten on a sheet of paper. Sometimes on whiteboards. Increasingly on iPads. And they keep track of progress being made and revel in the pleasure of ticking the items off as they’re completed.
3. They keep people informed of problems. Especially their bosses. They work to eliminate surprises, particularly those of the negative kind.
4. They share ideas and don’t necessarily always seek credit for things that work out well. They especially share ideas that increase productivity!
5. They go beyond the ‘here & now’. They volunteer and reach out to areas outside their direct scope. They become “go-to” people. The kind that others know will deliver, always!

In short, they work hard and willingly seek more responsibility. In time they get noticed. Their reputation spreads and their network grows. And then the phone rings… the chime that’s the sound opportunity!
